PHOCUS

音楽誌も読んでないわ新譜を買う数も減ったわで最近のシーンのこたぁさっぱりわからんのだけど、このPHOCUSというのは、トロントを拠点に活動しているトラックメーカー/MCのMUNESHINEとNYの新進気鋭のMCであるSYCORAX ONEのユニット、ということらしい。
で、そのPHOCUSのアルバム“A Vision And A Plan”を聴いているんだけれども、うん、いいかも。
ジャケットの上にペタリと貼ってあるステッカーや簡潔なライナーノーツを見るに、なんかやたらと「ジャジーである」と強調されているのだけれども、いざ聴いてみるとさほどジャズの要素は強調されていない。
ジャジーなHIPHOPというと、やっぱりTHE ROOTSを想像してしまうのだけれども、当のTHE ROOTSや、その直系ともいえるOTHELLO & THE HIPKNOTIKSの作品とはかなり印象が違う。というか、こちらはもっと音がクリアで、落ち着いた中にももうちょっときらびやかなイメージ。
言い換えると、適度にクリアで適度にポップなのだな。
で、「ポップ」ってなこというと、どうにもあまり良くない印象を受ける人が多かったりするのもHIPHOPのリスナーであったりするんだけれども（笑）。この場合誉め言葉として使っている。んで、PHOCUSにおけるポップさってのは、コード進行に長けたトラック作りの結果だと思うんだけども。
いわゆる「アンダーグラウンド」な人たちってえと、90年代に流行った音作りの影響下にある人が多く、またそういった人たちが評価されたりもするんだけれども、その実、聴いてみると肩の凝る作品が量産されていたりもするんだ。もちろん私見だけれども。
例えば（ここまで来ると個人的な好み以外の何物でもないんだけれども）DIALATED PEOPLES。クオリティが高いのはわかるし、志が高いのもわかるんだけども、どうも駄目なんだよ。聴いてて窮屈で仕方がない。MADLIBなんかもそう。
ぶっちゃけ、ニュースクール（90年代前半の連中）以降に対する解釈の違いってことなんだろうけども、どうも真剣な部分ばかりがクローズアップされているような。肩の凝らない楽しさを全面に出していたグループも少なくなかったはずなんだけども。
その点、PHOCUSのこのアルバムは聴いていて楽しい。
他に「楽しさ」を志向しているグループってえとJURASSIC 5やUGLY DUCKLINGあたりがいるけれども、確かにこの２グループと比べるとジャジーに聴こえないことも無いな（笑）。
比較対象としてはふさわしくないかもしれないけれども、JURASSIC 5の“Quality Control”と比肩する出来のアルバムだと思う。いや、収穫収穫。

関係ないけど、音質がクリアってのも「９０年代のデッドコピーじゃ終わらねえぞ」みたいな感じがして好感。
SHAWN J PERIODがウケた時期ってあったでしょ。あれ、もちろんビートの出来も凄いと思うんだけど、今思うと音質的な面での驚きっていうのもあったなあ、と。時代はまだまだ「あいれぺぜんざはーこー/らふらぐどぅんろー」な時代で、ざらついたビートがまだまだ幅を利かせていた時代（いや、そういう音、今でも全然好きだけどね）。そこに現れた全篇生演奏のクリアな音質ってのは、衝撃ではあったかもしれない。まあ、個人的な感想ですが。
